As a young girl, I grew up in an Indian household where I always had an interest in working in the kitchen with my mom. As much as I enjoyed having my mom’s homemade Indian cuisine, something else continuously piqued my interest. I was ecstatic when my mom used to bring home these delicious cake slices from a small stall near her place of work. I was fascinated with their delightful buttercream icing and the moist cake and could not compare to any other.
I started with box cake mixes and ready-made icing like most people. One day, when I was about 10 years old, out of the blue my mom surprised me with a mini decorating kit. Inside this small clear box was a piping bag, coupler, a few essential tips and a whole lot of dreams and curiosity. I still have those original tools and use them today.
Over the years, I pulled inspiration and learned from anywhere that offered new recipes or tips and tricks about baking. I got my time to shine when I got a job at Baskin-Robbins as a teenager! I loved getting to pipe the borders, make flowers, and fully decorate cakes but more importantly, make someone’s day.
My creativity influenced me to focus on architecture and construction career, but my love always remained baking and decorating. As my confidence grew, I was able to self teach myself new techniques and hone my appreciation for the art of baking and decorating. I started making birthday and anniversary cakes for family and friends. Mostly children character cakes such as Cinderella, Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Phineas and Ferb. Over the past few years, my family and friends encouraged me to expand my talents and share with the community at large.
In 2019 life forced me to re-examine my path, and I realized it was time to grow and develop my passion for baking and decorating. Making the jump from Construction to Baking was a risk, but it was something I enjoyed and made me happy. Once I started my new journey, the search for a name started. With great ideas and many back and forth from my family, Kakes & Kookies was born. I hope to make that little girl who enjoys baking proud!
